Jin Shin Jyutsu, like Acupressure and Acupuncture, harmonizes and
balances energy flows. It does not involve the use of needles, massage, manipulation of
muscles or deep pressure. Instead, the practitioner gently places fingertips on various body
points, restoring balance in particular energy pathways. Jin Shin Jyutsu is a valuable
complement to conventional healing methods. It boosts our own profound healing capacities and
thus promotes optimal health, well-being and vitality.

This dynamic ancient art was rediscovered by Jiro Murai, a Japanese philosopher, in the
early 1900’s. Murai, upon recovering from an illness diagnosed as terminal, vowed to research
the connection between his amazing recovery and his utilization of hand mudras. The
result of his years of study and experimentation are available now to all of us, a new
renaissance of this physio-philosophy.

Mary Burmeister brought the wisdom of Jin Shin Jyutsu to the United States in 1954.
She and her father, Uhachi Iino, had studied with Jiro Murai in Japan. Her studies with Murai
continued, through correspondence, until his death in the early 1960’s. For years, Mary
Burmeister was the sole instructor of the art of Jin Shin Jyutsu in this country. There are

In a typical Jin Shin Jyutsu session, which lasts about an hour, the recipient
remains clothed and lies face up on a treatment table, usually a comfortably cushioned
surface. The practitioner gently places fingertips on various safety energy locks in a
harmonizing sequence or flow. This facilitates the release of blockages in particular
energy pathways as well as aids the body in restoring balance. There are many energy pathways
in the body, each with a distinct function and essence. Practitioners may offer self-help
homework to continue harmonizing support.

An art that supports harmony in body, mind, emotions and spirit, Jin Shin Jyutsu gives
us the opportunity to engage in self-study to utilize self-help. It aids us in recognition of
the wisdom of the body. Mary Burmeister says,”In Jin Shin Jyutsu, there are no teachers or
masters, we are all the same. Be the example. Be your own testimony.”

The practice of Jin Shin Jyutsu is easily adapted for use along with certain other
forms of bodywork. For instance, a client may experience a Therapeutic Massage followed by the
very gentle, deeply-soothing and relaxing Jin Shin Jyutsu treatment.
